After the school’s decision, they announce a particular mark which must not be lower than the mark the UTME body fixed. Any candidate who score the set mark by the UTME body and did not reach the chosen school’s mark, is not eligible to obtain the school’s POST UTME or Screening form.

This mark set by the varsity admission board is known as the SCHOOL’S CUT OFF MARK.

  • Departmental cut-off marks

When a candidate meet the UTME cut off mark and also meet the chosen school’s cut off mark, he or she is now eligible to obtain the POST UTME or Screening form of that school. After the POST UTME or Screening exercise, the department you applied for will check the number of students seeking admission therein and also, the performance of those students in the POST UTME exercise, this analysis gives rise to a decision of setting a mark which the candidates must have to be eligible to be given their choice of course. This is known as the  DEPARTMENTAL CUT OFF MARK.

How Departmental Cut-off Marks Are Fixed

How university fix their departmental cut-off marks

The lowest aggregate score among candidates who were admitted for a given year is typically the departmental cut-off mark

For instance If 5,000 candidates submitted applications to the University of Ilorin to study pharmacy, but only 100 were accepted due to departmental quotas.

The cut-off mark for Pharmacy in UNILORIN  for that year will be the least aggregate score among the 100 admitted candidates that year.

Hope you now understand it.?

The cumulative score of the final applicant who will be admitted that year (not their JAMB or Post-UTME score)is the departmental cut-off mark.

Therefore, they must either admit more students than their quota or admit fewer students than their quota on merit if you want to enroll in that course and your score is below the departmental cut-off mark.
